Description
In 1664, per the Siberian Kiprianov Chronicle, Russia’s easternmost monastery-Nerchinsk Dormition (Uspensky) Male Monastery-was founded on the site of the Nelyudsky (Nerchinsk) Fortress. The monastery functioned as a place of exile for Archpriest Avvakum, Synod Vice-President G. Dashkov, and A. Radkevich. The construction of the main church commenced in 1706, and it was consecrated to the Dormition of the Theotokos in 1712. The building’s volumetric-spatial composition draws inspiration from late 17th-century religious architecture examples in Northeastern Russia. A standout decorative element is its unique, non-repeating window surrounds. The church has sustained substantial structural damage and deformations over time.
