Description
«A provincial ecclesiastical monument dating to the first quarter of the 19th century. Built in 1825 in the Late Classicism style. One of Nerchinsk’s earliest stone structures. The cathedral stands on the city’s highest ground; surrounded by residential buildings, within a fenced, set back from the street’s building line. It originally framed the panoramic perimeter of the city square and served as a vertical landmark in the city’s skyline. The spatial composition of the single-story, three-altar cathedral comprised an entrance with a bell tower above it (now lost), a refectory housing the side altars, the main church, and the sanctuary. The main volume is a two-tiered, octagonal church surmounted by a shallow eight-cloister vault, set on an attic-level octagonal base. The cathedral’s principal plan dimensions are 24 by 39.5 m. In 2003, the cathedral was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church, and the museum collection was moved to the M.D. Butin Estate. Since 2005, restoration of the bell tower and its belfry has been under way».
