Description
It serves as the main structure of Nerchinsk’s 19th-century trading square [...] It forms the southern part of the city square. It is among the oldest surviving structures in Nerchinsk. In Zabaykalsky Krai, it is the only surviving example of arcaded trading rows, constructed to a standard design in the Late Classicism style.. [...] Until 1840, the site housed a wooden predecessor structure. The new stone Gostiny Dvor officially opened to the public on 23 May 1840. The stone structure was co-financed and constructed by merchant Karyakin through a jointly-shares arrangement. Thirty yearsafter its opening, brick and iron stoves were installed in the individualshop units. Subsequently, in the early 20th century, an additional shop unit with two principal facades was appeared to the left wing of the symmetrical building. [...] Throughout its operational history, a porch was added to the right flank of the gallery on the main northeastern facade, windows were inserted into the original arched openings, and the commercial spaces were reconfigured. The building is in urgent need of comprehensive repairs and restoration, as the internal staircasehas been destroyed, railings are missing, and the roof structure and roofing materials are in a critical condition. Foundation subsidence has resulted in cracks in the arches separating the gallery’s outer and inner walls. The courtyard facade is deteriorating due to brickwork corrosion, triggered by the absence of a structured drainage system, an elevated cultural layer, and inadequate site grading and a protective apron (otmostka). In 2015, using funding from the federal budget ,the development of design and estimate documentation for the preservation of this cultural heritage site and its adaptive reuse for commercial purposes commenced.
