Description
«I. Town planning characteristics.
I.1. Located in the southern part of New Akatuy village on a gentle northeastern slope.
I.2. Compositional significance. The stone enclosure of the Akatuy Prison delineates the grounds of one of Russia’s most notorious penal-labour camps.
I.3. Size limits, silhouette: the rectangular precinct measures 72.92 × 99.79 m; its rectilinear silhouette is defined by a fence 2.87 m high.
I.4. Sectors and directions of specific disclosures, visual connections of the monument. The best visual perception of the object is carried out from Lunina Street.
II. Architectural and structural characteristics.
II.1 Spatial planning composition. A rectangular area, enclosed by a perimeter rubble-stone wall, is divided into two parts by a transverse wall.
II.2. Special features of planning connections: Access to the site is through an arched opening in the north-eastern (northeastern) wall; a second opening survives where a section of wall has been lost.
II.3. Structural elements: The fence wall, with a base (plinth) and a rectangular projecting cornice, is of rubble masonry set in lime mortar. Wall thickness is 0.75 m, increasing to 1.0 m at the plinth.
III. The building has historically valuable functional meaning. It’s a historical place linked with the Decembrists, political exiles, Polish insurgents, members of Narodnaya Volya, mutinous sailors from the “Prut” transport, and participants in the 1905–1907 revolution who opposed the imperial regime IV. Memorial plaque is a cast-iron slab on the southeast wall read: “These are the remains of the walls of the former Akatuy labour camp. The Decembrist M.S. Lunin, Polish rebels, Narodnaya Volya plotters, sailors from the Prut transport, Kurnatovsky, and others were held in prison. The prison was built in 1832 and closed in 1917».

«The prison has been built in 1832. The rectangular fence walls measuring 76 by 100 meters have been preserved. The walls are measures 2.85 meters high; thickness is 0.75 meter, increasing to 1.0 m at the plinth. The north-eastern wall bears a plaque with the reading: “The remains of the walls of the former Akatuyevsky prison… The prison was built in 1832 and closed in 1917».
